Black Republican candidate slams the 'sad' Congressional Black Caucus for backing her white Democrat opponent

A female black Republican running for the House of Representatives in Indiana is criticizing the Congressional Black Caucus (CBC) on Thursday for donating a hefty sum to her opponent, who is a white male Democrat.

Recent campaign finance documents show the CBC PAC gave $5,000 to Rep. Frank Mrvan's re-election campaign at the end of September.

Jennifer-Ruth Green, a black Air Force veteran who is running to unseat Mrvan in just three weeks on November 8, claimed the lawmaker group was putting 'power' ahead of 'people' in a statement sent to Fox News.

'It’s the American people versus the DC politicians and lobbyists,' Green said.

'I’m with the American people. The Congressional Black Caucus is with the politicians and lobbyists, and their career politician ally Frank Mrvan.

'America’s poorest communities are proof Frank Mrvan and the CBC care more about power and helping themselves than helping the people of northwest Indiana. It’s sad.'

The CBC labels itself nonpartisan, but every member listed on the caucus website is a Democrat.

DailyMail.com has reached out to Green and the CBC for further comment.

In an earlier statement to Fox, however, the CBC reacted to Green's claims by defending Mrvan's left-wing credentials.

'Congressman Mrvan understands the importance of a woman's right to choose and protecting access to healthcare for all people,' the group said.

'One of his first votes in Congress was for the American Rescue Plan which helped end this pandemic, put workers back on the job, and shored up the kinds of small businesses that are the backbone of Black community.'

Mrvan, a freshman facing his first re-election effort, is among the most vulnerable House Democrats in an election cycle that has an overall bleak outlook for the left.

The vast majority of public opinion polls forecast a Republican victory, though the margin has shrunk as election day looms.

Still, Republicans only need 218 members to reach a majority. There are currently 212 voting members of the House GOP.

If she wins, Green will be the only black woman elected to Congress as part of the GOP - and the second overall, after former Utah Rep. Mia Love.

The nonpartisan Cook Political Report rated Indiana's 1st Congressional District as a toss-up, though it leans slightly Democrat.

Green, however, has managed to bring in more donor dollars than Mrvan has in the final months of the race.

She raked in $1.4 million in the last quarter ending in September, compared to the Democrat's haul of just over $900,000, according to a press release on her campaign site.

Republicans nationwide responded with outrage recently when Green accused Politico of publishing her experience being sexually assaulted without her consent.

Green released a statement on October 9 revealing that she'd requested a criminal probe be opened into how the records were released and accusing Mrvan of having 'illegally obtained' them.

'I am saddened to have to share publicly one of the most private events of my life, and I’m even more saddened that Congressman Mrvan, who I applauded for authoring the Military Sexual Trauma bill, would engage in or tolerate this despicable behavior from his campaign and his allies,' part of her statement read.

'It’s unacceptable for every vet, it’s unacceptable for every woman, and it’s unacceptable for anyone who has ever been a victim of sexual assault.'
