New Yorkers Will Pay 77 Cents To $3.98 For Walmart Bags

Effective January 1, Walmart will no longer package groceries in bags for free. The practice began in Vermont, Maine, and New Jersey. In 2023, it will spread to New York and Colorado.

It caused much debate when Colorado residents learned they would pay 10 cents for an in-store bag. But New York locals will have to pay more; the cost is between 77 cents and $3.98. The expense depends on the size of the carrier. Please note. Shoppers can bring their carrier cases, use boxes, or walk out holding purchased goods.

Why is Walmart making this change? Will other retailers enact such a move?

Yes, Target, CVS, and other big retailers will ban single-use plastic bags in their stores. There will be an assigned price to it if such plastic is available. The associated cost varies between brands and store locations. The change will also affect shoppers' experiences at eateries. Restaurants will use paper bags and avoid styrofoam containers.

The change comes amid state law updates and pressure from environmental groups. The rules and associated taxes in each area are different. The United States has a zero waste goal it hopes to achieve by 2025. Walmart is also a part of the Beyond The Bag Initiative.

Walmart has 99 stores in New York and 88 shops in Colorado. Those numbers exclude Sam Club's branches. What about at-home deliveries? The items will go into a paper bag.
