During his Georgia senate campaign last year, former Georgia Bulldogs star running back Herschel Walker caused quite a bit of controversy when it was revealed that he was taking a tax credit in the state of Texas that was intended only for a primary residence, calling into question whether or not he actually lived in the state of Georgia. But it appears he’s fixed the issue.

According to a report from 11Alive, Walker requested that the homestead tax exemption that he previously claimed for his home in Westlake, Texas be removed for the 2021 and 2022 tax years.

“I am no longer a resident of Tarrant County or the State of Texas and therefore do not qualify for the homestead exemption,” Walker wrote in an application to have the break removed, according to 11Alive. “This property is not my primary residence.”

Jeff Law, the executive director and chief appraiser of the Tarrant Appraisal District, told 11Alive that Walker completed the paperwork in late November – presumably after the issues became public – and that everything was finalized in December.

It’s not immediately clear if walker will need to repay the tax breaks he received, which were less than $3,000 in total.

This is obviously an important move for Walker. Given that the exemption was intended only for primary residences, the fact that he claimed it on his taxes suggested that Walker was not a permanent resident of Georgia, which would make him ineligible to represent the state in congress. If he continued to claim the Texas tax exemption while his primary residence was in Georgia, it could be considered tax fraud.

It appears that Walker has cleared the issue up and will be free to run for office in Georgia once again if he chooses.
