The Pro Football Hall of Fame shared sad news today, as Dave Wilcox passed away at the age of 80.

Wilcox played collegiately at Oregon and spent the duration of his 10-year career with the San Francisco 49ers. A seven-time Pro Bowler, Wilcox was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2000.

As Matt Maiocco of NBC reported, "the flag at the Hall of Fame in Canton will be flown at half-staff in his honor."

Jim Porter, the Hall of Fame's president, paid fitting tribute to Wilcox's legacy in a statement.

"While Dave Wilcox was nicknamed 'The Intimidator' for his aggressive style of play, he was a kind, humble and gracious man in all other aspects of life. He transformed the outside linebacker position- one of the many feats that earned him a forever home in Canton."

Further, the Hall unearthed a quote from Wilcox that beautifully summarized his approach to the game.

"What I do best is not let people block me. I just hate to be blocked," said Wilcox.

"Nobody was going to run in my area; nobody was going to pass in my area. This was my spot, and nobody was welcome there- except me."

May this legend of the game rest in peace.
