OGDEN, Utah ( ABC4 ) — The Ogden City Police Department has released a statement after a video began circulating on social media earlier today, Apr. 23, of police hitting a man several times while he was on the ground.

The video shows several police officers, allegedly from the Ogden department, surrounding a man on the ground and punching him several times. It is not yet known the situation surrounding the incident or what prompted this use of force.

The video, which was originally taken to show family and friends, now has hundreds of shares on Facebook.

The video was taken by North Ogden resident Keaton Fuller after he had taken his grandmother’s car to the carwash on 17th Street and South Washington Boulevard. When he left the carwash, Fuller said he saw a man backing up slowly with his hands in the air and an officer in a car in front of him.

He then said he saw the man sprint across the road and the police jump out of his car to chase after him. The man then turned around to face the cops, according to Fuller, appearing to be prepared to fight. That’s when Fuller looked away to grab his phone.

“The next thing I know, it seemed like four cops [had] already pinned him down,” he said. “I have no idea if the man had any lethal weapons or what he did to deserve the few blows while four of them [had] already pinned him down.”

Fuller said he posted the video on his Snapchat, not intending it to get any attention outside of his family and friends. He posted the video with the caption, “It’s just like on TV,” as he said he had never seen anything like the incident in real life before.

While Fuller personally does not think it was necessary to be that aggressive after the man was already on the ground, he said he does not want to put down the police without knowing the full story.

“I don’t want to make the accusations until the police come out with their story, I just want to know the truth really,” Fuller said. “In the end, I just hope people get their answers.

The department released a statement after Fuller’s friend posted the video on Facebook saying it is currently investigating the incident and had begun the investigation prior to the release of the video. Authorities say the findings will be released to the public as well as any available footage.

    Read the full statement below:

“The Ogden Police Department is aware of a use of force incident involving our officers, which a bystander filmed. The department had begun an After-Action Use of Force investigation prior to the release of the bystander video. We will report those findings and all available Body Worn Camera footage as soon as possible.”
