Oppenheimer wins Best Picture at the Oscars but fans distracted by Pacino's major gaffe

Christopher Nolan's Oppenheimer has won the Oppenbarbie face-off bringing home the highly sought after Oscar for Best Picture at the 96th Academy Awards following an "awkward" introduction onstage from actor Al Pacino.

The moment was met from confusion from viewers as Pacino strangely introduced the winner of the award saying: "Best Picture…uh, I have to go to the envelope for that. And I will. Here it comes. And my eyes see Oppenheimer?" Despite the bizarre approach, film producer Emma Thomas and director Nolan headed to the stage to accept the award and share an emotional speech to the cheering star-studded crowd.

Fans took to X, formerly Twitter, sharing their reactions to the presenter's on-stage moment. One viewer wrote: "I’m obsessed with the way Al Pacino announced Oppenheimer as Best Picture. couldn’t have been more chaotic or confusing lol." Another added: "Did a crappy job! Did not even introduce the nominees." And a third wrote: "That was so awkward lmaoooo."

During Nolan's acceptance speech, the famous filmmaker said: "Movies are just a little bit over 100 years old. We don’t know where this incredible journey is going from here. But to know that you think I’m a meaningful part of it means the world to me.” After a sweet shoutout to his wife, he concluded: "Thank you to those who have believed in me my whole career."

The Best Picture category is the final award of the night and is considered as the most prestigious honor of the entire ceremony. This award is an incredible win as it recognizes the film considered the best of 2023 as chosen by the academy's voting members. Oppenbarbie once again faced off for the award both successful flicks were nominated for the category after sharing the same opening weekend and becoming two of the greatest box-office successes of the year.

Barbie and Oppenheimer became the first and third highest-grossing movies in the world in 2023. During the 2024 Oscar Awards, Nolan's Oppenheimer was a frontrunner receiving nominations across 13 different categories. The movie brought home an astounding eight Oscars by the end of the night including Best Picture, Best Actor, Best Supporting Actor, Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Original Score, Best Cinematography, and Best Costume design.

The other popular flicks that were nominated in the Best Picture category included Barbie, Killers of the Flower Moon, Poor Things, American Fiction, Anatomy of a Fall, The Holdovers, Maestro, Past Lives, and The Zone of Interest. And for the first time ever, three of the movies in the lineup were directed by women including the filmmakers of Barbie, Anatomy of a Fall, and Past Lives.

The thrilling historical biopic is a three-hour epic tale about the world's race to build the atomic bomb. The movie follows the brilliant and troubled American theoretical physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer, played by actor Cillian Murphy , as he worked on the Manhattan Project to create the bomb and the devastating effects he experienced after witnessing the world's first nuclear explosion. Following his captivating performance as the leading role, Cillian also brought home an Oscar for Best Actor.

During his acceptance speech, the 47-year-old actor reflected on the life-changing journey and said: "It's been the wildest, most exhilarating, most creatively satisfying journey you've taken me on over the last 20 years. I owe you more than I can say," he continued: "Thank you so much [to] every single crew member, every single cast member, on Oppenheimer; you guys carried me through. All my fellow nominees, I remain in awe of you guys. Truly."

Greta Gerwig's Barbie mo vie was also a top-runner at the Oscar Awards as the feminist comedy was nominated across eight different categories. The movie followed the famous doll Barbie, played by actress Margot Robbie, and Ken, played by actor Ryan Gosling, as they had the time of their lives in the seemingly perfect world of Barbie Land. But as they find themselves in the real world, they soon discover the troubles and perils of the human world.

During the Academy Awards, Ryan also took the stage for an unforgettable performance of the hit song I'm Just Ken from the soundtrack of the movie. The performance was an iconic one as he stepped out in a sparkling bright pink suit covered in rhinestones. During the show, the famous actor performed alongside Mark Ronson and later had a unlikely surprise appearance from Guns N Roses' Slash as he came out for a guitar solo.

Al Pacino's awkward on-stage blunder wasn't the only moment of the night, viewers were also blown away as actress Emma Stone won the Oscar for Best Actress . The 35-year-old star brought home the win following her incredible performance as Bella Baxter in Poor Things. And while the win was memorable in itself, she also suffered an unexpected wardrobe malfunction onstage as the back of her dress broke as she stood up to accept her award onstage.

Another mishap of the night was when actress Liza Koshy took a painful fall during her red carpet debut. As she stepped out in a glamorous tight red gown and towering eight-inch heels, she accidentally tripped and fell onto the ground. But Liza handled the fall with grace as she laughed off the fall and popped right back up.
