The Pentagon has created a new organization that will lead the department's investigations into mysterious objects in the sky.

The Defense Department announced the formation of the Airborne Object Identification and Management Synchronization Group, which will operate within the Under Secretary of Defense for Intelligence and Security, on Tuesday.

The group will “synchronize efforts across the Department and with other Federal departments and agencies to detect, identify and attribute objects of interests in SUA, and to assess and as appropriate, mitigate any associated threats to safety of flight and national security,” according to a memo from Deputy Defense Secretary Kathleen Hicks outlining their mission.

The Department of Defense “takes reports of incursions — by any airborne object, identified or unidentified — very seriously, and investigates each one,” the memo continues, noting that they will also “assess and mitigate any associated threats to safety of flight and national security.”

The also newly created Airborne Object Identification and Management Executive Council will “provide oversight and direction to the AOIMSG.”

The Office of the Director of National Intelligence released a much-anticipated assessment of 144 reports of UFOs originating from U.S. government sources between 2004 and 2021 in June. Eighty were observed with multiple different sensors, and most reports described the UFOs as objects that interrupted preplanned military training or other military operations.

The report also noted that “a handful” of the UFOs “appear to demonstrate advanced technology” and that “in 18 incidents, described in 21 reports, observers reported unusual UAP movement patterns or flight characteristics.”

Hicks’s memo commented on the report, saying that it “also identified the need to make improvements in processes, policies, technologies, and training to improve our ability to understand [unidentified aerial phenomenon].”

Former Sen. Bill Nelson, who runs NASA , speculated at the possibility of aliens during an event last month.

“My personal opinion is that the universe is so big, and now there are even theories that there might be other universes, and if that’s the case, who am I to say that Planet Earth is the only location of a life form that is civilized and organized like ours?” The NASA leader added, “Are there are other Planet Earths out there? I certainly think so, because the universe is so big.”

NASA and SpaceX on Tuesday launched a spacecraft on a mission to smash into an asteroid to test whether it has the capability to knock a space rock off course if one were hurtling toward Earth.
