BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — A man who fired 17 shots on a Greyhound bus as it traveled over the Grapevine, killing a woman and wounding five other passengers, was found guilty Thursday of all charges.

Anthony Devonte Williams showed no reaction as the verdict was read at 11:20 a.m. Jurors deliberated less than a day before convicting him of first-degree murder, six counts of attempted murder and six counts of assault with a gun.

A second phase of the trial will begin Monday to determine whether Williams was sane at the time of the shooting. If found insane, he’ll be confined at a state hospital instead of prison.

Williams, 37, admitted bringing a gun onto the bus headed from Los Angeles to Oakland. He told investigators he began shooting after arguing with a man as they traveled north on Interstate 5, south of Fort Tejon Road, on Feb. 3, 2020.

Lurbis Elena Vance, 51, was hit multiple times and died at the scene. Another woman was hit and paralyzed from the chest down.

The bus stopped and Williams got off after another passenger wrestled the gun away from him. The bus then traveled to the next exit where medical personnel and law enforcement arrived.

Williams was arrested soon after when officers found him walking along the highway.
