Poll shows community’s feelings about Kilmar Abrego Garcia’s deportation

17 days agoLANHAM, Md. ( DC News Now ) — A new poll is revealing how Americans feel about President Donald Trump and his administration’s handling of immigration, including the Kilmar Abrego Garcia case. It has been more than a month since the Maryland man was deported to El Salvador.
Many like Altamese Williams from Lanham want him brought back home.
“I think he got a great injustice, and I think they need to go down there and get him and bring him back here because he did nothing wrong and they won’t say why he is in jail,” said Williams.
Trump administration granted extension to provide information in Kilmar Abrego Garcia caseWhile the legal battle plays out in court, Americans weighed in their opinions in a Washington Post/ABC News/Ipsos poll.
According to the poll, 42% of respondees said that Abrego Garcia should be brought home. Twenty-six percent said that he should stay in prison, and 31% of people polled were not sure.
Bowie resident Janice Maclean believes Abrego Garcia deserves justice.
“I think that he should be able to come back home and have a fair trial if he is guilty of anything. And I am not sure if he is or not but it sounds like he was deported illegally,” Maclean.
Even though the White House admitted to deporting Garcia by mistake, they are refusing to bring him back home. Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt says he is a gang member and belongs in prison.
“To see the media refer to this man as someone who is a peaceful man living his life in Maryland. This has always been an illegal criminal and an MS 13 gang member and a foreign terrorist, and the administration maintains our position to deport these people from our communities,” said Leavitt.
Garcia was sent to prison in El Salvador on March 12. His legal team denies that Abrego Garcia is an MS-13 gang member and maintains he is innocent and was deported illegally.
