A CIA Spokesperson shared that Michael Gloss, son of CIA deputy director for digital innovation Juliane Gallina , died in combat – but neglected to share Gloss was fighting for the other side.

The spokesperson said that Gallina “suffered an unimaginable personal tragedy in the spring of 2024 when her son Michael Gloss, who struggled with mental health issues, died while fighting in the conflict in Ukraine.”

They continued, “CIA considers Michael’s passing to be a private family matter for the Gloss family –  not a national security issue…The entire CIA family is heartbroken for their loss…Juliane and her husband shared that ‘we adored our son and grieve his loss every moment. We appreciate privacy at this difficult time.’”

The spokesperson did not comment on what military Gloss was serving in, but a Russian news site previously reported that Gloss, 21, had signed up to serve with Russia’s forces.

When Gloss died last year, his family released a statement that he died “while traveling in Eastern Europe.”

The statement continued that Gloss lived a “brief, but fiercely beautiful life until he was taken from us during his travels overseas…Michael should be remembered for his noble heart and warrior spirit.”

A year following his death, new photos have emerged showing Gloss wearing camouflage and hanging out with other Russian soldiers.

Gloss had been seen promoting Russia’s war effort against “the Ukraine Proxy war” last year, sharing a photo of himself to social media in which he smiled while at Moscow’s Red Square, writing, “Russian is slaughtering dem boys on sight.”

Russian news sites were the first to report Gloss’ death, sharing Russian government information regarding Gloss’ social media use, extensive travel, and ultimate enrollment in the Russian army.

Gloss’ father, Larry, is ironically a US Navy veteran who participated in Operation Desert Storm and the Iraq War. He described his son to The Washington Post as someone who “wouldn’t hurt a flea.”
